Meta introduced Muse Image on July 7 as the first image model from Meta Superintelligence Labs. It launched in Meta AI and on meta.ai, with an Instagram Stories rollout in the United States and limited availability in WhatsApp. Meta promoted editing, multiple reference images and more than 30 effects as parts of the consumer experience.
A reference feature involving public Instagram accounts quickly drew privacy criticism. The concern centered on how a person's public account could be used within another user's image-generation flow. Meta removed that behavior on July 10, three days after the initial announcement, according to the company's material update and subsequent reporting.
The rollback did not remove the entire Muse Image model from Instagram or Meta's other products. It addressed the disputed public-account reference behavior. That narrower description is important because reports that say Muse Image itself disappeared would give users an inaccurate picture of what remained available.
Meta said generated media includes a hidden provenance signal. That measure can help identify synthetic output in supported systems, but it does not answer every question about account references, source images, regional data use or user controls. Those issues require current product documentation and a clear explanation of what happens when an image enters the model's workflow.
The launch changed materially in 72 hours, turning a product story into a record of user concern and rapid revision. The next test is whether Meta explains the remaining reference tools in terms people can understand and whether controls match the explanation across Instagram, WhatsApp, Meta AI and meta.ai.
What to watch next
Meta's regional availability, privacy controls and remaining reference-image behavior should be rechecked as the rollout changes.
