Reddit says AI systems are cutting spam and fake votes

Reddit said on July 6 that upgraded automated systems were stopping 23 million spam views a day before a person saw them. The company framed the work as protection for the human conversations that make the platform useful, at a time when generated posts, bots and manipulation have made online authenticity harder to judge.

The platform also said it was catching about 25,000 new spam posts and comments each day and revoking nearly 2 million inauthentic votes daily. Reddit reported that user exposure to spam fell 20 percent from January through March compared with the previous three months. All of those measurements were supplied by Reddit and have not been independently audited in the source set reviewed here.

Reddit said average enforcement time for hateful or violent English text had fallen below five seconds. Speed can reduce exposure, but it does not by itself show how often legitimate material is removed, how appeals work or whether performance extends to other languages. Denominators and false-positive rates would make the enforcement claims easier to assess.

The announcement targeted spam, bots, manipulation and harmful material. It was not a blanket ban on posts written with AI assistance. That distinction matters because low-quality content is not always generated, and generated content is not automatically evidence of vote manipulation or a coordinated account.

Reddit has a direct interest in proving that its conversations remain authentic to users and search engines. Its figures indicate scale and a change in enforcement, but they do not settle the wider question of whether people experience the site as more trustworthy. Independent audits, language-specific results and transparent appeal data would provide a stronger accountability record.
